Sedation dental treatment to beat fear of the dentist

The rise of sedation dental treatment means that thousands of patients who were once excluded from having good oral health because of fear, anxiety, or phobia are now finding a route back to a healthy, happy mouth in a stress-free environment. Adams Dental in North London offers sedation as part of its commitment to helping nervous patients get the treatment they need. Other options include hypnosis and the ability to use noise-cancelling headphones to drown out common triggers such as the sound of the drill.

At our North London dental practice we believe that everyone deserves a healthy mouth. But we also know that many people’s fear or phobia of the dentist is so strong that they put off seeking treatment – or simply refuse to go at all.

According to the Oral Health Foundation, 12% of the UK population experiences severe anxiety about visiting the dentist. It’s slightly more common in women than in men, but can affect people of all ages, from all backgrounds, and has a vast array of causes.

Sedation dental treatment is an excellent option for nervous patients. It does not mean you will be unconscious as with a general anaesthetic in hospital – you will be awake, so able to cooperate with your dentist during treatment. However, you will be in a very relaxed state, will feel no pain or discomfort, and will remember little to nothing about treatment when it’s complete.

North London sedation dental treatment options

There are two options for sedation dental treatment at our North London clinic, and we will discuss them both in detail prior to your appointment so that you know anything you need to do before or after your appointment.

The first is inhalation sedation, which is excellent if you are afraid of needles, and wears off soon after treatment is complete. It involves breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen.

The second is IV sedation, which is delivered by a small needle in your hand or arm, and requires you to bring a friend to take you home afterwards, because it takes longer for the sedatives to wear off.
